MTA Seniors Travel Back in Time

On Thursday, November 10, MTA seniors had the opportunity to go on a memorable trip to the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Manhattan that talks about Jews’ lives in Germany between 1937 and 1946. They learned how Jewish parents had to choose within days if they should send their children away so they could live their lives better than what they would have had in Germany. On May 13, 1939, 937 Jews boarded the St. Louis for Cuba. An interesting fact that surprised both seniors and passengers was that Captain Gustav Schroeder and his crew treated them with kindness and like humans which was no longer happening in Germany. Life had been terrible in the concentration camps. People were starving, and being tortured and brutally murdered.

“We have learned many things about the Holocaust,” a student who wished to remain anonymous said. “But the Museum of Jewish Heritage enables us to hear stories from people who experienced the Holocaust.”
