As part of their study of percent composition by mass of chemical compounds, Ariella Rosenbaum’s chemistry students used their skills to measure the percent of water lost when popcorn is popped and compared it to the average result of 14%. Additionally, as part of their unit on Stoichiometry—using proportions to measure the amounts of chemical substances during chemical reactions—students used the synthesis of a s’more to simulate this type of math. The students enjoyed freshly popped popcorn and delicious S’mores to celebrate their successes in the lab.
