The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Gotham Burger would like to recognize fourteen year old Carly Sheinfeld as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The Yeshivat Noam 8th Grader is ripping up the local basketball scene. Carly is a standout player for Bergen Broncos, Mitch Gross Basketball League and is co-captain of the 7th/8th grade Yeshivat Noam Knights. When asked about Carly, Yeshivat Noam Coach Ariela Herman told The Jewish Link, “Carly is a very hard-working basketball player, but it is her leadership and middot on and off the court that makes her a true role model. She is a great kid and a true team player.”
Carly, to echo Coach Herman, I was at one of your recent games and I was impressed by your ability and basketball IQ, but I was blown away by your unselfishness on the court. Many times you passed up on potential scoring opportunities to get your teammates involved.
Who would you say is your role model and why?
My mom is my role model because she teaches me to be a strong and independent woman and tells me that I can do anything I put my mind to. And she helped me answer this question.
What is your favorite professional sports team and why?
The Cubs! They never gave up over the last 108 years. I’m so excited that they won the World Series!
Do you have a pregame routine?
I don’t have a pregame routine. But you can find me at the Baskin Robbins on Route 4 after almost every game. I guess you could call that my post game routine.
What is your earliest sport memory?
Winning the 2nd/3rd grade MGBL Championship with my best friends.
What is your funniest sports related memory?
I don’t have one particular funny memory, but I can often be found “wiping up the floor” as my mom calls it while fighting for the ball.
Looking back, what is your all-time favorite sports memory?
Watching my great-grandfather be honored at a Chicago Blackhawks game as the Military Veteran of the night.
Other than basketball, what other sports do you enjoy?
I enjoy playing baseball and every four years, watching Olympic Water Polo. USA all the way!
What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?
Watch Netflix, hang out with friends and spend time with my family.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
Being able to take my Aunt Sharon out to dinner at Gotham Burger.
