Jason Goldsmith was a fitness enthusiast long before catchphrases like “health and wellness” were trending. While studying political science at the University of Michigan, he opted to spend a summer interning in the heart of Washington, D.C. It was then that he realized that his true calling lay not in politics, but in personal training. Driven by a newfound passion, Goldsmith redirected his focus to understanding human anatomy and exercise physiology and became certified in fitness instruction.
After graduating, Goldsmith married and started a family. As life unfolded, he felt a pull towards a more stable career path. In the 1990s, personal training wasn’t quite as established as it is today, said Goldsmith, who pivoted towards a career in digital marketing where he thrived for many years. Despite his professional success, his love for fitness never waned. Five years ago, he made the bold decision to recertify as a fitness trainer and embarked on a new era dedicated to inspiring others on their fitness journeys, most recently working at Life Time studio in Bergen County.
Today, Goldsmith trains clients under his own brand, Gold Fitness, which is built around his personal fitness experience and his extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology. His target audience is middle-aged men on a beginner to intermediate level who need to learn how to exercise and respond to changes in their body. At 52, Goldsmith has also struggled with the ups and downs of weight gain and the unique challenges that tend to appear at this stage of life. “I continue to improve as a professional trainer because I have worked through many of my own body issues and ailments,” he confided.
Central to Goldsmith’s philosophy is the belief that true health begins from the inside out. “It’s more about health span than life span,” he said, and stressed that his core objective is to get his clients healthy and keep them healthy. His workouts prioritize freedom of movement, cardiorespiratory fitness, and functional strength training, all aimed at making sure you enjoy a positive quality of life. Goldsmith likens his approach to preparing an athlete for a specific sport; in this case, the sport is just moving well and successfully living life.
“Working with Jason has been an absolute game-changer for my fitness journey. He’s incredibly knowledgeable about the body and its movements,” said David E. “It’s clear he is passionate about what he does. Jason has taught me the ins and outs of proper form and technique, making my workouts more effective and a lot more fun.”
As a seasoned trainer Goldsmith knows which exercises will work for you. He often meets clients who are eager to work out but have been emphasizing the wrong moves. Effective workouts for middle-aged men take less time and are less taxing on the body, he said, adding that his program focuses on movement patterns that improve physical fitness for everyday life.
Goldsmith views himself as more than a fitness coach. “I think of myself as an allied health professional who promotes healthy living and disease prevention.” His expertise extends far beyond traditional training and includes a wide range of fitness mastery, including corrective exercise, cardio conditioning, senior fitness, post-cardiac rehab, and programs focused on Type 2 diabetes. He isn’t looking for lifelong clients, rather he aims to help people learn how to work out independently and lead a healthy life. He even helps his clients obtain their own set of equipment so that they could take charge of their own fitness routine.
“I began working with Jason as the pandemic subsided and I needed a boost to restart my fitness journey. Over the ensuing two years, Jason kept evolving the program to keep it fresh and challenging,” said Joe H. “A steady trickle of new movements and methods got me back on track; now I’m comfortable getting a workout in at home, at a hotel, or in the local gym.”
Goldsmith understands that no two people are alike, which is why a personal trainer who tailors a workout specifically for you is so important. He offers in-person training, virtual coaching and online programs, and his methodology requires minimal equipment, which he feels is all you really need for a challenging workout. He currently trains clients in their homes or at a studio in Teaneck and recommends starting with two training sessions a week to achieve optimal results.
Goldsmith is offering prospective clients a no-obligation consultation to discuss a program that works for you. For more information, please visit www.goldfitnessnj.com or email [email protected].
