Wonderful Memories of Long Ago Days

While reading The Jewish Link last Shabbat, I was so surprised to see the photo of Dr. James Holland. (“Simon & Garfunkel Part II: Jimmie Holland and Psycho-Oncology” June 27, 2024)

In 1976, at age 21, I moved from Philadelphia to New York City (where it was easier for me to become more observant). As an accredited medical record technician, I got a job at Mount Sinai Hospital as a tumor registrar, working my way up to administrative assistant in the medical record department (including the cancer registry). I enjoyed the monthly cancer registry meetings led by Dr. Holland, as well as presenting the research I had done on particular cancers they were interested in studying. Dr. Holland was a pleasure to work for (in addition to Drs. Howard W. Bruckner, Carmel Cohen and others on the committee).

After working there for eight years, I got to know the staff and doctors quite well. You filled in a lot of information that was so interesting about Dr. Holland, which I didn’t know. He really was a remarkable man. I was glad to read that he and Dr. Jimmie lived a long happy life, both with so many accomplishments.

I recently retired from the health info/ medical records field (from JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey). From microfilm, microfiche, hard copies of charts to electronic medical records and EPIC, we’ve had a lot of changes and have come a long way.

Thanks again. Your article brought back very good memories.
