On Sunday, March 19, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Congregation Beth Aaron is hosting a wine tasting that’s not to be missed. Focusing exclusively on kosher wines from Israel, the event features wines from four boutique Israeli vineyards, each representing a different region of Israel, each with its own unique take on the fine art of winemaking.
Matar—Golan Heights
Although Matar harvests its grapes from north to south at vineyards throughout Israel, its wine is produced in the Golan Heights. The resulting wine is from the combination of a strong attachment to the land and winemaking experience that has accumulated over many years.
Shiloh—Judean Hills
Established in 2005, overlooking the astonishing view of the Benjamin strip, Shiloh Winery produces extraordinary wines from a biblical site that is the most ancient terroir in the world. The grape-growing conditions needed to produce the finest-quality wines exist in the Judean Desert and most notably where Shiloh’s vineyards are located. An oasis within a desert zone with cold nights, warm days and an altitude of more than 2,600 feet above sea level offers an ideal climate for wine growing. From this vineyard, founded by Dr. Mayer Chomer, winemaker Amichai Lourie has cultivated an array of world-class wines: Chardonnay, Merlot, Petite Syrah, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Red Blends.
Teperberg—Judean Mountains
Founded by Avraham Teperberg in 1870 in the Old City of Jerusalem, the winery was the first family winery established in Israel in the modern era. Since then, the winery has been owned and managed by the Teperberg family. Several years ago, the winery moved and settled in its new 20-dunam (2,000 sq. m.) premises, located at the Judean Mountains, Israel’s main tourist wine route. This region brings together ancient history and unique wine-growing conditions conducive to the production of quality wines grown in the choicest vineyard plots in the region.
Yatir—Negev Desert
Yatir is a small, high-quality winery founded in 2000 as a joint venture between the grapegrowers of the area and Carmel Winery. It is built at the foot of the famous Tel Arad archeological site, featuring the ruins of a 3,000-year-old Canaanite city and from the later period of Judea. The winery is situated in the northeastern Negev, fulfilling the dream of David Ben Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, of making the desert bloom. However, the high altitude, cool-climate vineyards of Yatir Forest are only 10 minutes away in the southern Judean Hills.
These boutique vineyards, from across Israel, produce world-class wines on par with the finest wines from across the globe, and you’ll be able to try wines from all of them, along with many others, at this amazing kosher wine-tasting event. The wines will be paired with authentic Israeli food from Sababa Grill, and you’ll even have a chance to meet world-renowned wine expert Jay Buchsbaum.
