(Courtesy of Chabad of WO) On July 16, 70 people gathered at Chabad of West Orange to hear the powerful story of Noga and Georgy Pechter, survivors of the devastating attacks on Kfar Aza on October 7.

The Pechters shared their personal account of loss, resilience and hope, describing how their peaceful life in Kfar Aza was shattered by the attacks. They had to break the news to their children that some of their closest friends and neighbors were murdered or kidnapped. However, they expressed gratitude that their 12-year-old’s classmate, who was kidnapped to Gaza, was returned home 51 days later. Noga poignantly shared how their son asked Georgy to be a father figure to his friends who lost their fathers.

The evening began with a warm welcome from Rabbi Mendy Kasowitz, followed by an introduction by Igor Vish, who hosted the Pechters during their visit. Noga’s talk was accompanied by raw photos and videos taken during and after the attacks.

Noga said, “We are not professional speakers. We just want to share our story. We feel so loved and supported by this wonderful community. This is what gives us strength to carry on.”

IDF reservists Itamar Israelit and Oria Isaak, representatives of Gav Lalohem (“We Got Your Back”), shared their experiences fighting in Khan Yunis, Gaza and southern Israel. Itamar added, “It is a terrible war and we had to carry out many dangerous operations. Our units sustained many injuries and casualties. However, we must defend our land and our people.”

Rabbi Kasowitz emphasized the importance of unity and supporting one another in the face of rising Jew-hatred worldwide. The audience joined in reciting the Shema and “Am Yisrael Chai,” symbolizing the strength and resilience of the Jewish community.

Gav Lalohem is a non-profit organization that supports and mentors young IDF soldiers transitioning to civilian life. Please consider supporting Gav Lalohem’s important work at www.gavla.org. For more information about this organization, see the article on page 77.
