Bob Menendez to Resign His U.S. Senate Seat

Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) is set to resign his seat effective August 20. Menendez recently faced a corruption trial and was convicted of all charges, including accepting bribes, acting as a foreign agent and obstructing justice, on July 16.

Menendez has faced increasing pressure from his own party to resign or face expulsion from Senate after a scandalous tenure. Menendez has represented NJ as a Democrat in Congress since 1992, and was up for reelection this year. He previously filed to run as an independent and has not clarified whether he still intends on doing so.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is set to appoint a replacement for Menendez for the remainder of his term, which ends on January 3, 2025.

Democratic Rep. Andy Kim and Republican Curtis Bashaw will face off in the November general election for Menendez’s seat.
