Tisha B’Av, a day steeped in mourning and reflection, is evolving into a communal experience in Teaneck this year. Teaneck Together, a pivotal organization in creating unity through year-round programming, is partnering with BaRock Orchestra to host a transformative kumzitz on Aug. 13 at the Jewish Center in Teaneck.
Back in the days of summer camp, Tisha B’Av was marked by a somber evening play aimed at connecting the community to the day’s profound meaning followed by the chanting of Megillat Eicha (the Book of Lamentations). The following morning was spent delving into the historical and emotional depths of the kinot, the liturgical poems recounting the tragedies befalling the Jewish people. However, outside the structured environment of camp, many find it challenging to connect with these traditional observances, especially in a society where the depth of Tisha B’Av might not resonate as strongly.
Recognizing this gap, Teaneck Together, along with Barock Orchestra and singers, is introducing a Unity Kumzitz as Tisha B’Av wanes and the fast day reaches its most challenging hours — when hunger deepens and focus may fade. Scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Jewish Center of Teaneck, this event is designed to rekindle connection through the universal language of music at a moment when physical and spiritual fatigue often peak.
The event will blend the informal, communal singing tradition of a kumzitz with the beautiful harmonies of a capella singing, showcasing sophisticated vocal renditions that capture the spirit and emotion of the day. The kumzitz will include “divrei chizuk,” helping attendees reflect on the loss but also the communal and individual resilience that characterizes the Jewish experience.
“The idea is to bring people together as the day ends — when they are most in need of uplift — to sing songs yearning for Jerusalem,” said Josh Shwarzbaum from Teaneck Together. “It’s about transforming how we experience Tisha B’Av, turning it into a moment of collective yearning and hope.”
This event aims not only to provide a space for reflection but also to foster bonds within the community, embodying Teaneck Together’s mission to create unity among all synagogues in Bergen County. It promises to be a poignant reminder of the power of community and song to transform a traditionally somber day into one of profound communal connection and hope.
