Academic Study Needs Volunteers

Seeking children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors interested in intergenerational trauma work.

(Courtesy of Connect 4 Me Therapy) Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based practice utilized to help trauma and its effects. The goal of this treatment is to take a specific memory and to make it less distressing. A positive cognition will be interwoven to help process this.

Eligibility: In order to qualify for this study, you must have a parent or grandparent who survived the Holocaust in Europe. We will ask you to complete a “History Taking Tool” and “Historical Intergenerational Trauma Transmission Questionnaire,” which will determine your intergenerational trauma impact, and a clinician will let you know if you qualify for this study.

Time Needed: Approximately 10 weeks; 45 minutes to 1 hour a week.

Benefits: We cannot promise any benefits to you or others from your taking part in this research.

However, possible benefits include assisting your trauma. The physical sensations, disturbing images and thoughts, and painful emotions may no longer be present in the trauma you have been through, even if the memory is still remembered. Additionally, the memory may become reintegrated and stored more adaptively. Your mind may do its own healing, through EMDR.

Doctoral Research: Sherry Schwartz, LCSW is a private practice owner in Nutley, New Jersey and a University at Buffalo doctoral student. She has done research on trauma and Holocaust survivors. This study will show that the evidence-based practice of EMDR is a modality that will assist this population.

Cost: There is no cost to you to participate in this research study. For any EMDR therapy sessions, we will submit out-of-network claims to your insurance. You can still continue the treatment, regardless of whether your insurance pays for the therapy sessions.

Start Now: To begin, please contact Connect 4 Me Therapy by phone or text at 973-931-1234 or email: [email protected] For further information on the study, please email [email protected]. In-person or virtual sessions are available. In-person sessions will be held at 349 Franklin Ave., Nutley, New Jersey.
