In last week’s Aug. 1 issue of The Jewish Link, there was a letter written by Rabbi M.R. (I prefer not to use his full name) in which he criticized another reader’s letter to the editor (“Show Some Respect”). In a nutshell, Rabbi M.R. felt that the reader’s expression of President Joe Biden’s “cognitive decline” was inappropriate and disrespectful to the president, noting that he isn’t the president’s personal physician. One need not be a medical doctor to notice someone’s cognitive decline, especially a public figure.
Numerous media outlets have reported on Biden’s current state. A July 2 article on newsweek.com is entitled “Joe Biden Has Suffered ‘Cognitive Decline’ in Past Six Months: Report.”
In his desire to disparage the former president, Rabbi M.R. cited only a portion of a recent comment that Trump made. When Sean Hannity asked Trump point blank if he would be a dictator, Trump responded with “No, no, no, other than day one. We’re closing the border and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.” Anyone who has seen Trump speak knows that his “dictator” comment was hyperbole. Rabbi M.R. is fear mongering by falsely claiming that Trump is “a threat to democracy.” A true threat to democracy is removing Biden after he received the necessary votes to secure the Democratic nomination and replacing him with Kamala Harris, a woman who hasn’t received a single vote from the people.
In summation, Rabbi M.R.’s desire to pressure The Jewish Link not to publish letters that disparage Biden, while deliberately misquoting President Trump, is a terrifying example in which those who claim to be proponents of “democracy” attempt to suppress free speech.
