The Humble Toast Sportstar Of the Week: Lea Bernstein

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Lea Bernstein as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The 10 year old rising fifth grader at the Yavneh Academy is a tremendous athlete and an even better teammate. A former coach told The Jewish Link,  “Lea plays any position her coaches ask without complaining and most importantly Lea always makes sure that the whole team is involved in the game and considers an assist as important (if not more important) as scoring herself.” Shaina Gross, Camp Regesh older girls division head, added, “I really enjoyed getting to know Lea this summer at Camp Regesh but she is easy to spot with her backward baseball cap she wears every day and she shows great middot to her fellow bunk mates whether playing sports or off the field/court. She is a team player, while she may be the top scorer in her teams league basketball game but she sees the court well and looks to give a great pass to her teammates. Getting the assist is just as important to her.”

Lea, congratulations on being recognized as this week’s sportstar of the week. Who is your role model and why?

My parents, because they lead by example. They are always helping me, my sisters and other people and they teach me to help other people too.

What is your favorite sport?

Basketball, because you are always moving and can never stop to watch. I really enjoy playing on my Zion team with my friends from Yavneh. Softball is really fun too where I pitch and play first base to be part of the action.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

I hit the game-tying shot to send a MGBL game to overtime then the game winner in OT. My team also won Camp Regesh leagues this summer and I was the MVP.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

The GOAT #22 Caitlin Clark! She’s insane and makes everyone around her a better player.

What is your earliest sports memory?

Hitting a wiffle ball off a tee in the yard with my dad when I was 2 years old.

What is your favorite sports memory?

I went to the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Championship with my dad this summer.  We sat very close to the court and it was so cool seeing all of the players in action.

What is your funniest sports memory?

When someone one my team scored in the wrong hoop. It was their first time scoring a basket and I congratulated them. Everyone, especially the kid who scored, laughed for a while.

What do you like to do when you are not playing sports?

Watching sports and hanging out with my family and friends.

What is your pregame routine?

Listen to music and shoot around with my team.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

Encouraging younger girls to play sports and have fun.

The Humble Toast Star of the week will receive a $25 gift card to The Humble Toast. Please send nominees for an upcoming The Humble Toast Jewish Link Stars of the Week to [email protected].
