My name is Jennifer Levy, and I am a candidate for the Teaneck Board of Education. I strongly support adding a board goal that focuses explicitly on academic achievement and curriculum. The current goal—”Teachers and administrators in the Teaneck Public Schools will further elevate academic programs by creating varied learning pathways and by improving student supports”—is too broad and lacks the accountability necessary to ensure meaningful academic progress. A focus on curriculum and academic excellence is not just the role of teachers and administrators; the board has a responsibility to set clear, measurable goals that hold everyone responsible for improving student outcomes.
Districts like Montclair and Ewing Township have developed board goals that ensure accountability and drive academic achievement, and Teaneck should follow suit. We need a board goal that is specific and results-oriented, one that addresses curriculum development, closing achievement gaps, and prioritizes every student reaching their full potential. This is exactly the type of work our board should be doing, and I was disappointed to see efforts in this direction tabled rather than embraced. Our focus should be on ensuring every student in Teaneck has access to the highest quality education, and that begins with making academic achievement a clear and measurable priority.
