In commemoration of October 7, each grade level at MDS participated in meaningful activities designed to foster reflection, unity and shine a light in darkness.

Students in first and second grades participated in a meaningful candle-lighting ceremony led by Rabbi Cohen and Mrs. Masri. This intimate moment encouraged reflection on remembrance and the power of collective understanding. Simultaneously, grades three through five joined an inter-school unity event via Zoom, connecting with 20 other day schools across the country for tefillot and inspiration, reinforcing the vital role of community in our lives.

The middle school held a powerful assembly that featured Tehillim recitation for the IDF, candle lighting in memory of those lost, and moving stories from IDF soldiers Mickey Flaumenhaft and Eitan Martin. This gathering created a space for mourning and inspiration, linking students to the heroism of those who defend Israel. Additionally, eighth graders curated a special Hall of Heroism exhibit in Hebrew, showcasing the courage and resilience of Israelis over the past year. The carefully crafted displays honored local heroes and served as a poignant reminder of the strength found in resilience.

The evening culminated in a heartfelt Family Mishmar, where students from fifth to eighth grade, along with their parents and faculty, engaged in the study of Torah and the recitation of Tehillim. The atmosphere was further enriched by inspiring songs during a kumzitz, serving as a powerful reminder of faith and the strength of community.

MDS commemorated October 7, reinforcing the vital connections of its community and emphasized unity, resilience and the importance of standing together in challenging times.
