The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Seth Silverman as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Seth Silverman has been playing sports for as long as he can remember. In middle school he won two basketball championships playing for Moriah and was the quarterback for the first place flag football team. In high school he played basketball all four years, but junior year he found volleyball and as a senior, was captain of Frisch’s team. He also played IFL at Frisch and went back to be a ref any time he was home from college. Though he could not try out for any sports teams in Binghamton because of Shabbos restrictions, he did play in their basketball, volleyball and football leagues. He even threw the most touchdowns as a quarterback in one league season. Even now as an adult on the West Side, Seth plays weekly in a basketball league.
Seth congratulations on your upcoming marriage to Shira Wax and on being recognized as this week’s sportstar of the week. What is your favorite team?
My favorite sports team is the Brooklyn Nets. No matter how far they fall, I am always loyal to them. I have 28 Nets jerseys and just applied to be an official Nets fan. I am really hoping that Shira lets me take my Nets linen to our apartment at least for guests.
What is your favorite sport?
My favorite sport is football. I love playing quarterback and leading the offense. I enjoy the pressure of having the game in my hands and guiding my team down the field. I’m competitive, so being in control and pushing for the win motivates me.
What is your greatest sports accomplishment?
My greatest sports accomplishment was scoring 30 points in an intense intercamp game against Camp Morasha for Team Nesher. I didn’t miss a single shot that day—it felt like I couldn’t be stopped. Even though we lost, the adrenaline and perfection of my performance made it an unforgettable moment.
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
My favorite athlete is Devon Harris because who else would it be??
What is your favorite sports memory?
My favorite sports memory is when I celebrated my birthday at the New Jersey Nets game in the Izod Center. It was so much fun celebrating such an incredible life milestone with my closest friends at the game of a team I so passionately love.
What is your earliest sports memory?
My earliest sports memory is watching the Giants take down the undefeated Patriots in the 2007-08 Super Bowl. That insane helmet catch by David Tyree and the Giants pulling off the upset left a huge impression on me. I’ll never forget the feeling of watching history unfold as the underdogs came out on top.
What do you like to do when you are not playing sports?
When I’m not playing sports, I love singing with the Y-Studs. It’s a great way to express myself and have fun with an amazing group of people. I’m also a huge fan of watching “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson”—there’s nothing better than a good laugh from his crazy sketches.
What is your greatest sports moment?
My favorite sports moment was winning the Keter Torah knock hockey tournament back in fourth grade.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
The best thing about being a sportstar is opening up The Jewish Link and seeing myself in the spot that I coveted for so many years! Plus, it’s great validation for my fiancée—she can finally say she’s marrying a sportstar and not just some guy who thinks he’s one!
