More than 200 free pizzas were distributed to a diverse crowd of Teaneck residents during the one-hour ‘Pizza and Politics’ event, held at Poppy’s Bagels Pizza and TCBY, located at 204 West Englewood Ave. The event created a vibrant space for community dialogue, allowing residents to connect with local council and board of education candidates while discussing meaningful issues affecting the community.
The event featured council candidates Karen Orgen and Chondra Young, along with board of education candidates Jennifer Levy and Kevin T. Gibbs, who each offered brief remarks before engaging residents’ questions and concerns. Throughout the event, the candidates reinforced their dedication to transparency, facts and responsive leadership, even when answers might not align with residents’ expectations.
A key moment came when a resident expressed concerns about redevelopment along American Leisure Drive, stating firmly, “Not in my backyard.” In response, Orgen detailed the thorough vetting process for redevelopment projects in Teaneck, emphasizing that development only occurs on vacant or abandoned properties. She highlighted the recent completion of the affordable senior housing project at 1425 Teaneck Road, which demonstrates the tangible benefits of thoughtful redevelopment. “This project not only provides a safe landing place for seniors looking to downsize, but also offers convenient amenities like a drug store, urgent care, and a coffee shop, alongside first-floor commercial space,” she explained. “Projects like this enhance quality of life while preserving Teaneck’s unique character.”
A younger resident raised questions about safety at his high school. Both Gibbs and Levy emphasized that local engagement is crucial for accountability, ensuring that safety concerns are addressed effectively. “Having direct access to local leaders gives students and parents the opportunity to spotlight issues and drive actionable change,” they noted.
Young addressed a question from a 40-year resident who recalled a time when community issues were resolved locally. She spoke passionately about her commitment to unifying the community, fostering open conversations that lead to meaningful solutions and stronger race relations. “We must confront division head-on, bringing people together through dialogue that educates and encourages understanding,” she said.
The event also welcomed Bergen County Commissioner Tracy Zur, who addressed residents’ concerns about a long-standing bridge construction issue. “While I can’t go into too much detail due to the sensitivity of this very valid concern, I can assure you it is being addressed, and progress will ensue,” she stated, demonstrating her dedication to advancing infrastructure solutions for Teaneck.
Former Township Town Manager Dean Kazinci attended as a guest but engaged with residents, sharing updates on projects initiated during his tenure and expressing confidence that the current administration is well-equipped to see their completion. Kazinci voiced his support for re-electing Mark Schwartz and Karen Orgen to council, citing his positive working relationship with both candidates and trust in their ability to sustain Teaneck’s progress. He also expressed confidence in Chondra Young and the board of education candidates, Jennifer Levy and Kevin Gibbs, emphasizing their suitability for the roles and their potential to bring fresh perspectives to local governance.
Candidates took a brief break from early voting meet-and-greets at the Rodda Center to participate in this community-focused event. Deputy Mayor Elie Y. Katz concluded the gathering by urging residents to vote, emphasizing, “With early voting underway, now is the time to make your voice heard. While the presidential race is significant, we must also prioritize local governance by voting down the line for council and board of education.”
