BPY students and families came together for a vibrant Super Sunday, kicking off with an impactful river cleanup at Van Saun Mill Brook and continuing with a beloved community lantern walk.
The day began with BPY students volunteering at the 36th annual river cleanup, organized by the Hackensack Riverkeeper. This important event saw participants collecting litter—primarily plastic—that had drifted into the woods and stream. Volunteers worked diligently to prevent this waste from breaking down into harmful microplastics, which pose risks to both our environment and food supply. Their efforts not only helped preserve the local ecosystem but also instilled a sense of responsibility and awareness in the students about the impact of pollution.
Later in the evening, families gathered for the sunset lantern walk, a cherished tradition that helps mark the transition into the darker months of the year. Participants crafted colorful lanterns before embarking on a scenic sunset stroll through the BPY backwoods. The crisp autumn air was filled with excitement as children explored the natural surroundings, discovering animal homes, balancing on logs and enjoying a natural swing.
The night concluded with a heartwarming gathering where families sang bedtime songs and recited Shema Yisrael. This memorable event served as a beautiful way to embrace the early darkness of winter, reminding everyone that change can bring its own kind of magic.
Together, these events showcased the spirit of community engagement and the joy of connecting with nature, making the day truly special for all involved!
