RKYHS offers 60 chugim, or clubs. A hallmark of the chugim at RKYHS is that RKYHS students can conceive of an idea for a club based on their interest, be encouraged by RKYHS to pursue it, and then take the lead and make it happen. Two chugim that are well underway this year that were conceived of and executed by students are Archery and the Voluntutor Clubs.
The RKYHS students in Voluntutor headed to the Martin Luther King Youth Center in Bridgewater last week for a visit to the children there. The RKYHS volunteers work with the students in the after school program doing homework, reading and playing games with the children at the center. The center for grade school and middle school students originally began as a youth center and a safe haven for diverse children in the neighborhood to keep them off the streets. Over time, the center expanded to include educational and summer camp programs on a sliding income scale for children from low-income families, who would not be able to afford such services.
The RKYHS Archery Club has been practicing in the beautiful fall weather. The club is guided by KC Chiu, an Olympic archery coach and trainer who is a trustee and treasurer of the New Jersey Archery Association and competes and places at national archery competitions. This student-initiated and student-led club meets weekly to perfect their techniques and practice the sport.
