Bruriah was privileged to hear from Dr. Shaina Trapedo, an associate professor of English at Stern College of Yeshiva University, whose breadth as a scholar encompasses not only literature and history, but Torah as well. In a lecture entitled “The Ethics of Hospitality in Avraham’s Tent and Macbeth’s Manor,” Dr. Trapedo led the 11th and 12th graders through a fascinating discussion of the profound impact the Bible had on Shakespeare. Tracing Shakepeare’s references and allusions, Dr. Trapedo highlighted his themes as particularly rich in Torah thought, showing the weight that hospitality carries in Parshas Lech Lecha, Halacha and “Macbeth.” With humor, substance and poise, Dr. Trapedo stressed the need for personal connectivity and the emphasis on having openness—but not necessarily too much openness—to others. Students and faculty alike were delighted by her stimulating speech, finding the topics unique, relevant and engaging.
