PFLP Gets Back in the Game

BEIRUT—According to The Jerusalem Post, after 40 years of peace the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC), a U.S.-designated terror group in Damascus, is about to go to war with Israel in the Golan Heights. And Syrian President Bashar Assad and Hezbollah say that they are ready to stand behind them. Assad and Iran are allies, and Assad is the “arms conduit to Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.” (Iran and Hezbollah are Shiites. Assad is an Alawite. Most others in the region are Sunni, and there is also an extremist Salafi sect, among others.)

In a statement issued on May 10, the PFLP-GC announced it will form brigades to work on “liberating all violated (Israeli-occupied) territories, first and foremost the occupied Golan,” and has asked Syrians to volunteer “in the formation of the resistance.”

“We announce that we stand with the Syrian popular resistance and offer material and spiritual support as well as coordination in order to liberate the Syrian Golan,” said Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Hezbollah, who said Assad will provide him game-changing weapons. It is precisely those weapons Israel was said to have destroyed in its raid on Damascus a few weeks ago. (The defensive Israeli action has been viewed as an act of war by Assad, Iran, and other extreme regimes and terrorist groups in the region.)
