Tip #21 of 52 From Gun For Hire: Keeping Your Home Safe During Holiday Travel

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration and giving, but it’s also a period when homes are more vulnerable to break-ins and theft. With increased travel, heightened shopping activity and the presence of valuable gifts in homes, it’s important to take extra precautions to secure your property. Here are some tips to help keep your home safe during the holidays.

Lock All Doors and Windows

The simplest but most effective way to keep your home secure is to ensure that all doors and windows are locked before leaving for any holiday gatherings or vacations. Burglars often target homes with easy access, so don’t leave any doors or windows open or unlocked, even if you plan to be home for a while. Reinforce weak entry points with deadbolts or sliding door security bars. Consider installing a security system that monitors all entry points.

Use Timers for Lights

One common sign that a house is empty is when the lights stay off for an extended period. To make it look like someone is home, use timers to automatically turn on lights in different rooms at different times, mimicking normal daily activity. You can also set timers for your television or radio to create the illusion that someone is home. Many smart home devices allow you to control lights remotely, which can be especially convenient for adjusting settings while you’re away.

Be Cautious With Deliveries

Holiday shopping often involves online purchases, which means more packages being delivered to your doorstep. Thieves are aware of this increase in deliveries and may target homes for unattended packages, especially if they’re left on the porch. If possible, arrange for packages to be delivered when you’re home, or have them sent to a secure location, such as your office or a neighbor’s house. Services like Amazon Locker or package delivery services with tracking can help you monitor the status of deliveries. Additionally, consider installing a lockbox or secure mailbox where packages can be left safely.

Keep Your Home Address Private

If you’re going on a holiday trip, refrain from sharing your exact travel plans with people who don’t need to know. Publicly advertising when you’re away could give burglars a window of opportunity. Be discreet when discussing your vacation plans, and avoid leaving clues that you’re out of town. For instance, don’t let newspapers or packages pile up at your door. If you’re traveling for an extended period, request that the post office holds your mail.

Set Up a Security Camera System

Installing security cameras around your property can act as a deterrent to would-be burglars. Visible cameras can make criminals think twice before attempting to break in. Additionally, they provide valuable footage in the event that something does happen. Many modern cameras offer high-definition video, night vision and cloud storage, so you can monitor your home remotely and have access to the footage if needed.

The holiday season is about family, friends and making memories—but keeping your home safe should always be a priority. By implementing a combination of security measures, staying vigilant and being proactive about your home’s safety, you can ensure a peaceful and worry-free holiday season.
