Last week, SAR Academy and High School students and faculty had the privilege of hearing from Rabbi Dr. Yitz Greenberg, noted Jewish philosopher and founder of SAR Academy. Rabbi Greenberg spoke with faculty from both schools, respectively, about ideas from his new book, “The Triumph of Life.” He focused on the importance of recognizing the tzelem elokim in each individual and the particular implications of this concept for teachers.
In another meaningful session, Rabbi Greenberg met with high school students in the SAR Historical Society to discuss the founding of SAR Academy and the emergence of its educational philosophy. In response to student questions, Rabbi Greenberg framed the establishment of SAR within the context of 1960s suburbanization and progressive education. He also provided many precious anecdotes from the early days of the school. Rabbi Greenberg emphasized that the core principle of SAR is that every student was created in the image of God, b’tzelem elokim, and accordingly must be treated with dignity, respect and, most importantly, love.
“It was particularly interesting to learn how the many contrasting visions for a new school came together to form SAR. It was also very cool to learn about SAR’s original goals and values and how they have evolved but also stayed so constant and central over the past 50+ years,” said Hila L.
SAR faculty are excited to continue exploring Rabbi Greenberg’s newly released magnum opus, “The Triumph of Life: A Narrative Theology of Judaism.” SAR faculty and staff will be gathering for a book club to discuss these important themes, and a parent and grandparent book club has begun delving further into Rabbi Greenberg’s book.
