JCOT Hosts Prof. Sarah Rindner at Book Club Discussion

Twenty-two participants convened this past Sunday night to delve into the novel “Stoner” by John Williams. “Stoner” has been called “one of the great forgotten novels of the [20th] century,” and the group enjoyed analyzing the themes and literary qualities of the book under the guidance of instructor Sarah Rindner. As an extension of the discussion, Rabbi Daniel Fridman taught a Talmudic story about Rabbi Eliezer ben Hurcanus, and suggested some parallels between the unyielding integrity of Rabbi Eliezer and that of Stoner’s protagonist.

The next meeting of the Leaves of Faith Book Club will take place on September 10, Sunday evening, at 8 p.m., and the participants will discuss “The Screwtape Letters” by C.S. Lewis.

All interested participants are requested to read the book in advance.

The Jewish Center of Teaneck’s Leaves of Faith Book Club meets for stimulating and religiously inspiring discussions about great literature.

The Jewish Center of Teaneck is at 70 Sterling Place. Entrance is by the ramp on Sterling Place.
