The Humble Toast Sportstar of the Week: Nick Lewin

The Jewish Link and The Humble Toast would like to recognize Nick Lewin as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The Tenafly High School junior is coming off a tremendous seven-day span. During this stretch, Lewin led the CMEK high school club team to the fall league championship. Scoring 27 points against Westwood HS, 25 points against Shooting Academy of Midland Park and in the championship 15 points against Heichal. When asked about Lewin, Chad Meckles of CMEK told The Jewish Link, “Nick is amongst the best players and kids in our state. He’s been training in the CMEK program since he was 6 years old. And now he serves as a role model and assists in our youth clinics. He’s the ultimate three-level scorer and an incredibly tough defender. He possesses a high basketball IQ and is a clutch performer. He plays with unbelievable determination, a swagger and great confidence. I’m so proud of him for leading our team to another league championship.”

Nick congratulations on the championship and on being recognized as this week’s sportstar of the week. Who is your role model and why?

My role model would be my grandma because she survived the Holocaust as a refugee in Italy by living under a different identity to survive. This showed me how to persevere under the worst possible conditions.

What is your favorite sport?

My favorite sport is basketball because I started at a young age and I realized I was pretty good. I also like how fast paced it is, rather than other sports being slower. I also like how it is team based and I enjoy playing with my teammates.

What is your earliest sports memory?

My earliest sports memory is learning how to play basketball in kindergarten in the CMEK program.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sports accomplishment would be getting nominated by coaches and newspaper writers for NJ.com’s top sophomore basketball player in the state of New Jersey for the 2023/2024 season. I did win top sophomore and I’m very proud of that.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

My favorite athlete is Steph Curry because he wasn’t recruited heavily in high school and had to work really hard to make it to the NBA and now he’s a superstar. He also makes his teammates better as well as helps his community out.

What is your pregame routine?

My pre game routine would be to drink a lot of electrolytes, eat some fruit like bananas and apples, stretch and then do form shooting.

What is your funniest sports memory?

My funniest sports memory would be getting a bad haircut and I had to wear a headband for a couple of weeks to hide it.

What do you like to do when you are not playing sports?

My favorite things to do when I’m not playing sports are hanging out with my friends and watching college basketball.

What is your favorite sports moment?

My favorite sports memory was beating the number 13 seed, Lyndhurst, when we were the 20th seed in the 2024 Bergen County Jamboree where I had 22 points. We went on to the elite 8 of the tournament, only the second time in Tenafly High School history.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

My favorite part about being a Sportstar is traveling to new places while meeting new teammates and coaches.
