Teaneck Doghouse Sportstar of the Week: Gabriella Herrmann

The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Teaneck Doghouse would like to recognize 13-year-old Gabriella Herrmann as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Herrmann will be starting eighth grade at The Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey next week. Earlier this month she captured first place in her age group at the Camp Mesorah/Yachad “Super Run.”

Gabriella, congrats on being part of such an amazing event and for finishing in first place. As a terrific athlete, who are your role models, and why?

My role models would definitely be my parents. My dad will always go running with me. He teaches me tricks about running like having a steady pace and how to not run out of breath. My mom is my personal cheerleader. She is always cheering me on, whether it’s when I’m running or playing basketball.

Who is your favorite athlete, and why?

My favorite athlete is Stephen Curry. Not only is Stephen really great at basketball but he loves his fans. He’ll always hang with fans, take a picture with them and sign his autograph. A lot of remarkable things that Stephen does is when he sees someone who is going through a hard time and really wants to meet him, he’ll make it happen.

What is your favorite sport?

My favorite sport is basketball and I love to go running.

What is your pre-run routine, if you have one?

Before I go running I like to stretch and listen to my music.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment, so far?

My greatest sports accomplishment would be when I crossed the finish line for Team Yachad, in the Miami Half Marathon, in January. Running the half marathon with my dad was a special accomplishment because I never thought I could do that, but I did!

What is your favorite sports memory?

My favorite sports memory is when I came first in my division in the NYC Generosity Run. Also in the Yachad 5K in Camp Mesorah, I placed first in my division. This shows that hard work pays off.

What is your earliest sport memory?

My earliest sport memory was in third grade when I scored the winning goal for my team in soccer! That same day, when I was goalie, there was a penalty kick, for the other team, by the goal line (which is pretty close to the goal). I was really nervous that I would let the goal in but I saved it!

What is the funniest thing that happened to you while playing sports?

This past summer, in Camp Mesorah, I was playing softball with my bunk and I was up to bat. I hit the ball and I started running to first base. When I got to first base, I saw that I had mud all over myself because I ran through the really muddy area! OOOOPS!!

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

I love hanging out with my friends and family.

What is the best thing about being a sportstar?

The best part about being a sportstar is that I get to make my friends and family proud!

The Teaneck Doghouse Sportstar of the Week will receive a $15 gift certificate to Teaneck Doghouse. Please send nominees for an upcoming Teaneck Doghouse Sportstar of the Week to [email protected].
