The real estate market may be in its winter lull, but one unexpected visitor reminded us that not everything slows down this time of year. Earlier this week, a large hawk made a very dramatic entrance into our office—literally.
The event began with a loud crash that startled our quiet street. Neighbors reported hearing the sound of shattering glass and quickly called the police. Upon investigation, it turned out a hawk had flown directly through the front glass window of our office, setting off the burglar alarm and causing quite the commotion.
The police were the first on the scene, but when the hawk showed no signs of leaving, they called in the fire department for assistance. Even their best efforts couldn’t convince the bird to vacate the premises. Finally, animal control arrived, carefully maneuvering the majestic creature out of our office and ensuring it was unharmed.
As we watched the scene unfold, we couldn’t help but see the symbolism in the hawk’s presence. While these months are typically the quietest in the real estate world, hawks thrive in winter. With bare trees offering no cover for their prey, hawks are at their most active, taking advantage of every opportunity to secure what they need. Perhaps, like many of our clients, this hawk was even scouting for a new home.
The winter market has its challenges—shorter days, lower inventory and the quiet pause that comes with the season. Yet, it also presents unique opportunities for those with the vision to act. Buyers willing to brave the colder months can find homes with less competition, while sellers who list now may attract serious, motivated offers.
We’d like to thank our neighbors for their quick action, the police and fire departments for their assistance, and animal control for ensuring our feathered visitor’s safety. And to the hawk: Thank you for the timely reminder that winter is not just a time for hibernation. For those who know how to navigate the season’s unique challenges, there’s plenty of activity—and opportunity—to be found.
