BPY first graders had an amazing time at their field trip to the Society of Illustrators museum in New York City! They spent time looking at over 200 pictures created with water color, computer animation, oil painting and more! Every child filled out a special keepsake during the scavenger hunt which allowed them to explore the exhibit and taught them all about different parts of books and the purpose of illustrations. As they walked through the exhibit, they identified different artists’ illustration styles, then had the opportunity to create their own pictures and mini books. They worked with Ms. Claire Pernice, a children’s book illustrator, who taught them how to draw animals step by step and with various expressions, which helps bring to life the story as the animals (or other characters) move about and experience various emotions. They are so excited to take their newfound illustration skills and put them to great use as they continue being the best authors and illustrators they can be.
