BPY Students Participate in ‘Names Not Numbers©’ Project

Ben Porat Yosef eighth grade students who are participating in “Names Not Numbers,” a unique oral history film project and curriculum that teaches about the Holocaust, visited the Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust on Monday, November 6. There, they began learning in earnest about the Shoah. Students toured the core exhibit, attended a workshop on Jewish resistance, and had a concluding discussion with Morah Amanda, who talked about her grandmother Raizel’s own act of resistance during Kristallnacht. As part of the “Names Not Numbers” film project, the students will be learning the art of filmmaking from journalists and filmmakers in order to prepare to interview Holocaust survivors and camp liberators. Once they complete their research and interviews of the survivors and/or liberators to whom they were assigned, our students will help edit the filmed interviews and weave them together into one cohesive documentary film. This film will be screened at the end of the year for students, their families and teachers, the film participants and the community. Each school’s documentary will then be archived in the National Library in Jerusalem, Yeshiva University’s Special Collections Library and Yad Vashem: World Holocaust Center, in Jerusalem.
