The story of the Jews in Egypt is a story that we can relate to today. It is a story of antisemitism and of people trying to get rid of the Jews because they are scared they will take over. They are scared of the Jews becoming bigger or greater than their nation. Well, despite the hardship, suffering, and pain the Jews endured in Egypt, the Holocaust, or any antisemitic hate crime, the Jews always win and come out stronger.
That being said, Parshat Beshalach is not only teaching us that we will continuously win as Jews but it teaches us what to do after and why. After being slaves and working hard, the Jews walk across the sea and watch those who have harmed them drown. Despite their losses and all the pain they have endured, they find a way to dance and sing to thank God. They find a way to dance again!
As our hostages slowly come home, we see that while there is still the pain from the past and from not having all the hostages back, nevertheless, we dance! We rejoice, and we thank God for what we have. Not only are we thanking Hashem for what we have, but we thank Him for helping clear the world of evil. We weren’t rejoicing that Hashem took revenge on those Egyptians who harmed us, but we rejoiced because we knew that no one could be hurt by those evil people anymore. This is the Jewish spirit: the spirit to dance again through the pain!
May we always have the ability to dance and sing, to thank Hashem for the good that we have, even in the darkness, and may we all be able to dance that the evil has been wiped out from the world. May we dance again speedily as one nation with one heart!
