BPY Fifth Graders Prepare For Middle School

Last week, BPY hosted a dynamic introduction event designed especially for our current fifth grade students to ease their transition into middle school. The day wrapped up with an exciting program where the fifth graders were divided into small groups and paired with enthusiastic eighth grade guides. Through a series of interactive stations, students explored key differences between elementary and middle school life—from participating in sports teams and choosing electives to understanding the structure of Judaic studies classes and tracking within the middle school. Each station offered hands-on insights and practical tips, setting the stage for the challenges and opportunities that await them.

The event culminated in a unified session in the gym, where all participants reviewed a typical day in middle school and discussed the organizational structure that supports their academic and extracurricular endeavors. A special mishmar led by Rabbi Emerson, the associate head of school, added a meaningful touch, reinforcing the community’s values, before the group gathered in the cafeteria with the middle school mishmar group to enjoy a delicious mishmar dinner. The goal of the evening was clear: to have  seasoned eighth graders share their experiences, offer guidance, and help fifth graders feel confident and excited about their upcoming journey into middle school.
