Yeshiva University has launched a master’s program in data analytics and visualization at its Monique C. and Mordecai D. Katz School of Graduate and Professional Studies. This industry-focused master’s degree will equip graduates with state-of-the-art data analysis skills that will prepare them for high-impact data careers in areas that range from financial modeling, energy consumption and online purchasing to the prediction of disease and epidemics. Students can complete their degree in as quickly as one year or part time, whichever option best fits their schedules.
“Labor market analysis shows data-related jobs growing rapidly, evidenced by large numbers of open positions, exponential job growth and high salaries,” said Dr. Paul Russo, dean of the Katz School. “IBM released a study this year predicting the number of job openings for US data professionals will increase to 2,720,000 by 2020. This will be a 16 percent increase over five years. That same study found that 39 percent of data analyst and data scientist positions require a master’s degree or higher. At the Katz School, it is our mission to meet this need by creating relevant and in-demand professionally oriented programs.”
Currently accepting applications for fall 2018, the program features a project-driven curriculum created and taught by leading practitioners in the field at companies such as JP Morgan Chase, Ford Motor Company, Citibank and Cisco, in addition to YU’s faculty in mathematics and computer science. Courses include data science, visual design and storytelling, data driven organizations, computational mathematics and statistics and data mining, among others. The program will culminate with a studio course that builds upon all previous courses as students integrate their skills to take on real challenges facing modern organizations as they design and implement a solution from start to finish.
“Our degree will enable students to understand, manipulate and manage data; develop and exploit models; and deploy data systems in service of developing organizational insights and improved decisions, processes and policies,” said program director Andrew Catlin, a serial entrepreneur in data analytics and data science and co-founder of several successful startups including Citigate Hudson, Metrics Reporting and Mad Dog Data Science. “The courses were designed to fit together so students can tackle much more complex tasks much earlier and emerge with a portfolio that would be the equivalent of five years of experience out in the field.”
Courses can be taken on campus or online, full-time or part-time, and the program’s location in the heart of New York City and partnership with the university’s Career Center will help students obtain internships at top companies in finance, technology and other areas.
