SAR Hosts Annual Nashir Choral Festival

On Wednesday, February 5, SAR High School was proud to host its annual Nashir Choral Festival. This year, over 130 students participated, representing the choirs of SAR High School, Ramaz Upper School, North Shore Hebrew Academy High School, Abraham Joshua Heschel High School and Yeshivah of Flatbush High School. Each choir was led by its dedicated conductor: Rabbi Kenneth Birnbaum (SAR), Daniel Henkin (Ramaz), Adena Korn (Heschel), Ricky Sasson (Flatbush) and Chazan Yitzy Spinner (North Shore).

The festival began with an inspiring group song led by legendary choral conductor Eleanor Epstein. She guided the students in a rousing performance of Sephardic Havdalah Melodies, a piece she had arranged.

Throughout the day, students participated in workshops led by esteemed musicians and educators. Keith Harris, conductor of the Gotham Barbershop Chorus, shared insights into the art of barbershop harmony and tags. Composer and conductor Josh Ehrlich led an engaging session on arranging for a cappella. Jazz vocalist Andrea Wolper introduced students to the expressive possibilities of jazz singing and improvisation and conductor/pianist Scott Stein worked with participants on the art of conducting.

The festival concluded with a powerful concert for the entire school, showcasing the talents and hard work of all the choirs. The energy and camaraderie in the room reflected the essence of Nashir—bringing voices together in harmony and joy. The climax was the joint performance of Sephardic Havdalah Melodies, under the direction of Eleanor Epstein.

Founded in 2007 by Rabbi Kenneth Birnbaum, the Nashir Choral Festival has become a cherished tradition, fostering musical collaboration and excellence among Jewish high school choirs.
