Ben Porat Yosef fifth grade students went on a trip to see the movie “Wonder” at Teaneck Cinemas, on Monday, November 20, after having first studied the book by author RJ Palacio in class. Following their return to school, teachers and students had a debriefing session in which they discussed the differences between the book and the film, and their reactions to the movie. Following this discussion, students split into different groups and experienced a series of “kindness stations,” in which they reflected and brainstormed on some ways they can make kindness a central part of their educational and life experiences. They then got to work on implementing their ideas. Some of their activities included making “kindness grams” to distribute to other students and teachers, catching people around school who are doing an act of kindness, making bookmarks for their sefarim that reflect the Hebrew phrase: “Al tihiyeh tzodek—tihiyeh tzadik,” which encapsulates one of the phrases from the book that states that it is better to be kind than it is to be right. They also created reminder signs to hang around the school about the importance of always choosing kindness.
