Judah Maccabee Can Help Children Overcome Their Fears

Reviewing: “Judah Maccabee Goes to the Doctor,” by Ann D. Koffsky, Illustrations by Talitha Shipman. Apple & Honey Press. 32 pages. 2017. ISBN-10: 1681155222.

“Judah Maccabee Goes to the Doctor” combines a number of themes in an engaging picture book. Author Ann D. Koffsky and illustrator Talitha Shipman incorporate elements about the festival of Chanukah, the protectiveness of a big brother towards his little sister (even when she doesn’t appreciate his help) and the fear that some children have of vaccinations. Judah prides himself on keeping his baby sister safe, but when it is time to get a shot, he balks. However, when Judah’s dad explains that by protecting himself from sickness, the little boy is also keeping Hannah from catching something bad, the child courageously emulates the fabled warrior, Judah Maccabee, the hero of the Chanukah story.

The illustrations are delightful, with their warm and varied palette of appealing colors, big-eyed and adorable children, cuddly stuffed animals, and a cute grey cat. Particularly noteworthy is the drawing that shows germs trying to attack the body, while the shot serves as a shield that allows the white blood cells to do their magic against villainous microorganisms. Other beautiful illustrations include one in which the family drives past cozy-looking shops on a snowy day, and another that shows the entire clan celebrating a joyous Chanukah. The town looks lovely, with its mom and pop stores, snow-covered houses and kids romping with their dog.

The writing is appropriate for pre-schoolers to second graders. Koffsky emphasizes the qualities of loyalty to a sibling, courage and the value of religious tradition. This would be a welcome Chanukah gift, but it has qualities that would also make it a fine read-aloud at any time of the year.
