SAR Sting Varsity Boys Hockey Defeats DRS Wildcats

On November 30, the SAR Sting boys varsity hockey team traveled to the DRS Greenhouse to take on the defending champions from Woodmere. SAR lost a tough semi-final match last season at DRS and were looking for a big win this time around.

The DRS seniors, led by goaltending star and captain Jakey Friedman, carried a 36-game winning streak, spanning over two plus seasons, heading into this big regular season matchup— quite an impressive record. The Greenhouse was packed with fans watching SAR and DRS battle hard through two scoreless periods, with good goaltending from SAR’s Henri Kolb and DRS’s Jakey Friedman.

SAR came out strong in the third period and got on the scoreboard first on a wrap around goal by senior clutch forward Judah Fortgang, with nine minutes left in the third. The forward line of Fortgang and Jacob Nayowitz has provided a real spark to the Sting’s offense, particularly in big games this season.

SAR continued the pressure to draw a penalty mid-way through the period. The Sting capitalized on the power play to go up 2-0 off a nice goal by senior captain Jason Burian on a great cross-court pass by senior captain Gordie Kolb. DRS answered back with a nice goal of their own to cut the deficit to 2-1 with under five minutes left.

DRS then received a power play with just under three minutes to go. SAR sent out all three captains—Jason Burian, Shua Friedman, and Gordie Kolb—to kill off the penalty. The trio did a phenomenal job shutting down the DRS power play and prevented any real threats to close out the game and give the Sting a huge 2-1 victory.

The Sting’s impressive win, ended the long winning streak of the DRS seniors and puts the Sting in the driver’s seat for first place in the division and home advantage in the playoffs. SAR currently sits at 6-0-1-0 heading into matchups at Kushner, TABC, and vs MTA before the winter break.
