TABC Juniors Visit Lower East Side

In a recent adventure through New York City’s rich historical tapestry, Mr. Liam Machlin’s 11H and 11A history students embarked on an insightful class trip to the Tenement Museum and Eldridge Street Synagogue. This unique excursion provided a hands-on experience, allowing students to connect with their Jewish past and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse communities that have shaped the city. The Tenement Museum, nestled in the heart of the Lower East Side, served as a time machine, transporting the students back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As they explored the meticulously preserved apartments, each telling a different immigrant family’s story, the students appreciated the challenges and triumphs of those who built their lives in the bustling metropolis. From cramped living conditions to tales of resilience, the museum brought history to life. At the Eldridge Street Synagogue, whose establishment dates back to 1887, a guided tour illuminated the history, customs and traditions of the Jewish community in the Lower East Side, allowing the students to appreciate the role of faith in shaping the cultural mosaic of the Jewish community. In the spirit of TABC’s commitment to experiential learning, this trip was a resounding success, impacting the boys’ understanding of history, culture and the shared human experience.
