In honor of Chodesh Shvat, Kitah Bet and Kitah Gimmel have been immersed in an exciting tree unit. To start off the unit, they read a book called עצים מכל המנים where they learned how to compare and contrast the different parts of a tree, and added many new vocabulary words to their vocabulary dictionaries. They even learned a fun and interactive song to remember the names of each part of the tree. From the גזע to the עלים and even the פרחים, they noticed how the small details help to distinguish one tree from another.

The children then split up into groups to work on a collaborative tree project. Each group read a Hebrew book about a specific fruit tree (orange, fig, cherry, olive, pomegranate and grape) and worked with a guided reading sheet to compile information such as “What do the leaves of my tree look like?” and “Is my fruit one of the שבעת המינים?” The children then created a poster with their facts written in עברית and presented their research to the class. They did a fantastic job!

After hearing the presentations, each child was then able to make a personal choice about which tree he or she wanted to use for an independent tree project. They practiced many important skills while working on this project. They compiled their research and created digital tree books on iTalam, and each child took home his or her very own book!
