With the full knowledge that none of the local shuls would despair if we were not to attend their many Megilla readings, we decided to heed the notification that was sent on TeaneckShuls and written about in The Jewish Link inviting people to attend the reading at the Paterson Shul. Indeed, we were thrilled that we had made that decision. As we walked into the minyan in our costumes, faces were surprised and grateful. Attending the reading were approximately six women and nine men.

Rabbi Abe Weintraub of Fair Lawn was the ba’al koreh and explained various aspects of the Megilla prior to the reading. The shul itself was founded in 1972 for the elderly residents of Federation Apartments, an independent-living apartment complex at 510 East 27th Street. The minyan has been kept alive by several dedicated gabbaim over the years, including Sam Heller, David Berman, Abe Adler and the late Isaac Meryam and Reverend Joseph Fuchs. When David Berman and his family made aliyah, his role as “the cholent pot” person was handed over to Jerry Schranz, whose title also became that of gabbai. Jerry lives at the edge of Fair Lawn and Elmwood Park and his walk entails crossing a bridge into Passaic County. The 30-minute walk is more soothing in the spring and summer than during the blustery winter months, when the mitzvah becomes his reward during challenging days.

Now that we have experienced the Paterson Shul, we have made a mental note for next Purim. What an amazing difference it would make if we could convince 20 other people to bring their happy faces and fun costumes to enhance this minyan.

Next year, enjoy Purim in Paterson where, once again, by giving you come away receiving more than you ever imagined. During the year, the Paterson Shul is looking for others to visit and partake in the davening and layning. It is a perfect opportunity for a chesed activity for a bar or bat mitzvah.
