BPY middle school students celebrated a very important holiday on March 14: Pi Day, or 3-14. In order to properly honor the day, students measured both the circumference and diameter of a variety of circular objects and then divided the circumference by its diameter in order to derive the number pi. They then learned about the critical role that this important number plays in many different mathematical computations. This was extra fun as the students got to eat their “circles,” which all were edible treats. Students also created their own compasses using two pieces of string/twine, a nail/thumbtack, a pencil, a few pieces of cardstock paper and a ruler. They were asked to figure out how to fashion these materials into a compass-like contraption that can make a “perfect” circle, and were then asked to measure the circumference and diameter of various circles and then to calculate pi.
