Parenting Is a Partnership

I took exception to Elizabeth Kratz’s article, “Another Cost of Yeshiva Day School: Mom’s Career” (March 15, 2018). Her claim that it’s usually the mom who takes a vacation day for snow days, Chol Hamoed Sukkot or other school closings is not true. When our child was young my wife and I would look at the school calendar and come up with a plan for the year. I would take some days so she could go to work and she would take days off so I could go to work. My wife often came home during Chol Hamoed Pesach so she could go to work while I spent the remainder of the chag away from her and cared for our child myself (with help from her grandparents). Additionally, my wife works as a dietitian in a long-term care center and is considered “essential staff.” She’s had to drive herself to work in very dangerous conditions or spend the night at the facility to look after the health and well-being of the residents in her care while I was home caring for our child. Lastly, with advancements in technology, many men in professional jobs (myself included) have the ability and flexibility to work from home and look after the children. Bottom line is, marriage, including parenting, is a partnership and requires sacrifices by both moms and dads.
