Every year, the ballroom of Bruriah High School turns into a theater, as the students prepare for their annual mother-daughter musical production. This production lets the students from all grades use their talents to shine, whether they excel at acting, singing, dancing, drawing and painting or making sure lighting, sound, curtains and all the other behind-the-scenes activities are running smoothly.
This year’s theme was “Journeys” and was performed in front of approximately 500 people. The script was written in memory of Bruriah’s principal, Chaya Newman and follows the Green family as they embark on a road trip for their daughter, Sarah, who has recently returned from an all-girls camp where she became inspired about her Judaism. The production weaves singing, dancing, acting and a narration through the Green’s story. The various narrations compare the theme of the show to Newman’s life, and the songs and dances all connect to the theme. Fan favorites of the production include the pantomime, in which a scene is acted on stage as the choir sings a song, and the song dance, an upbeat dance where students fill the room from all sides, dancing to one of Bruriah’s favorite songs.
One of the most amazing aspects of the production is that it is completely student run. Students are chosen to head the various parts of the production and given the ability to create their dances, harmonies, skit scenes and more. Additionally, the production enables each student to showcase her talents; something that might not be visible in a classroom environment. The performers develop tight bonds from practicing together, as they work to create this masterpiece.
Lastly, one of the most meaningful parts of this year’s production, was that the girls got to learn more about Bruriah and Newman’s legacy. Although none of Bruriah’s current students were students of Newman’s, after experiencing this year’s “Journeys” production, they all formed closer connections with her, and are now able to express their hakarat hatov for her vision and dedication in making Bruriah into the amazing place it is today.
