BPY First Grader’s Boeing ‘Dreamliner’ Essay Takes Flight

When his class was asked to compose individual opinion essays, BPY first grader Doni Cohn knew exactly what he wanted to write about: the 787 Dreamliner twin engine jet airplane, on which he had previously traveled to Israel. Unbeknownst to Doni, one of his teachers, Yael Wine, is the daughter of a Boeing employee, the company that manufactures the 787 Dreamliners. When Morah Yael read Doni’s essay, she knew that she had to share it with her father, Jesse Schwartzman, who works in Boeing Defense Space and Security.

“When Doni wrote the piece, I immediately took a picture and sent it to my father,” said Morah Yael. “He loved what Doni wrote and asked if he could share it with Boeing.”

Not only did Schwartzman share it with his company, but it was posted on the Boeing app, the official source of news and information for Boeing employees. Schwartzman’s colleagues loved reading Doni’s opinion essay.

“I was pleasantly surprised when Yael gave me a copy of Doni Cohn’s essay on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, impressed that a first-grader could write such an insightful essay, and humored by his perspective (“The TVs are good”),” said Schwartzman. “The products that Boeing builds get high marks from airline passengers, pilots, astronauts and the armed forces. We’re proud to count first graders among our fans too! Doni’s essay was a big hit at Boeing.”

Schwartzman decided to pay Doni a visit in class, congratulate him on his compelling opinion piece and gift him with a model-size Boeing Dreamliner! Doni was thrilled and his classmates were so happy for him.

Doni said, “It was an amazing experience to see someone who made a plane like the one I went on. I was waiting so long to meet Morah Yael’s father and it finally happened.”

“It made me so happy to see how proud Doni was of his work and that his writing was going to be posted by Boeing,” said Morah Yael. “Doni’s excitement continued when my father came in to meet with him. As an educator, watching a student’s pride in his work develop and come to fruition is what teaching is all about!”
