In coordination with their force and motion science unit, RYNJ third grade students heard a brief presentation about how physics impacts safety during the playing of football and riding a bike. Utilizing the design process and transforming the cafeteria into a makerspace, children worked in teams to design, create and test helmets. The tests were performed by inserting a real egg into the helmet. The students both dropped and rolled the helmet, to make sure the egg could withstand the force. Thanks to Dan Sanacore, director of athletics and resident judge, the children whose helmet were deemed the “most safe” based on our egg challenge test received certificates.
