(Courtesy of Kaplen JCC on the Palisades) The Chuck Guttenberg Center for the Physically Challenged at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades will host its annual Special Games on Sunday, September 30, 12-2:30 p.m. This field day provides children, teens and adults who are differently abled with the opportunity to engage in physical activity and interact with others in a friendly, supportive environment. Activities include golf putt, basketball, softball throw, Frisbee toss, lacrosse throw, bean bag toss, beach volleyball and more. Nearly 200 athletes and volunteers will gather on the fields of the JCC to participate in this popular event and celebrate their success with a lively, end-of-day barbecue.
“The Games are a volunteer-run event and a wonderful experience for everyone who gets involved, so we encourage people to participate and volunteer,” says Guttenberg Center for Special Services Director Shelley Levy. “All participants receive ribbons for every event in which they participate, and the enthusiastic volunteers who help and cheer on the participants give these athletes a great sense of accomplishment and pride.”
Family, friends and volunteers contribute to the success of the day, bringing a sense of community and accomplishment to all those who attend. Cost is $10 for participants. If you’re interested in volunteering, participating or sponsoring, please contact Mindy Liebowitz at 201-408-1490 or [email protected].
Special Games is held by The Chuck Guttenberg Center for the Physically Challenged, established by Adele and Bill Guttenberg in loving memory of their son, Chuck. It provides vital services for children, teens and adults with autism, as well as numerous developmental and physical challenges.
