After starting the season 0-2, the Scrubs knew they had to turn their season around if they wanted to play in the playoffs. The Scrubs finished the season with the top seed winning the next 10 games finishing at an amazing 10-2 record. With timely hitting and consistent pitching along with solid defense, the Scrubs were destined to do something they’ve never done before; to be CBY softball champions.

The softball gods were not especially kind this year. More than ever, there were rainouts after rainouts making it extremely difficult for the commissioners to schedule and the players to play consistent softball. Many teams had to play multiple doubleheaders throughout the season. With the hard work of the commissioners and team captains, they managed to complete the season in time for the playoffs which began Labor Day weekend.

The Scrubs faced off against the Blackouts. After the Scrubs took an early 3-0 lead, their bats went silent for the remainder of the game only mustering a few hits. Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Scrubs managed to tie the game on a sacrifice fly sending the game into extra innings. However in the top of the next inning, the Blackouts scored three more runs after a very obvious call did not go the Scrubs’ way. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Scrubs immediately put runners on base with the core of their lineup coming up to bat. They came all the way back from a three-run deficit and capped it off with a two-run walk off home run to complete an amazing comeback and continue their win streak.

After a mental and physically draining semifinal game in the heat, the Scrubs played the Kings in game one of a best out of three championship, immediately after their win against the Blackouts. This was the second time in the Scrubs’ three year existence that their playing in the championship. Their previous trip did not end too well, as they were destroyed by the Knockers. Game one began with the Kings getting an early 1-0 lead, but the Scrubs were able to take the lead 2-1. After multiple lead changes, the Scrubs were able to blow it open with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more runs in the bottom of the sixth defeating the Kings 13-5, putting an end to an exhaustive day.

This past Sunday, game two was played. The Scrubs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back. By the end of the third inning, it was already 12-1. The Scrubs cruised to another 13-5 win to sweep the championship series 2-0. After five months of softball, the Scrubs can finally call themselves champs. We asked the team captain, “What stood out more so this season than in the past?” He said, “Acquiring free agent manager Simi Friedman put us ahead of everyone else. He really knows how to manage everyone and he gets them to play at their highest level. When you come to a team having already won five championships, guys will listen to what he has to say.”
