MGBL Second Grade Girls Championship 2018

This past sunday’s second grade championship game marked the end of yet another season of MGBL basketball. Despite having being pushed back a week, the game lived up to the hype. The Akari Therapeutics Plc team came into the big game with a 6-1 record, the Bellcar Electric team that they would face today handing them their only defeat.

Bellcar Electric broke the ice when Olivia Wahrhaftig nailed the first basket of the game. Akarai Therapeutic answered back with buckets from Kira Furer, Nava Zomberg and two free throws from Rebecca Summers.

The next two and a half quarters saw both teams exchange baskets, but it appeared that Akarai Therapeutic was ready to seal the deal up five points with less than two minutes to play. That was until Ballcar’s Orly Hoffer went on a personal 5-0 run including a buzzer beater that sent the game into overtime.

The first overtime was a race up and down the court with both teams getting good looks but unable to convert. Most of the second overtime mirrored the first, the shots simply were not falling. Until Kira Furer nailed a second chance opportunity with five seconds on the clock to give Akarai Therapeutic the championship.

Everyone walked away a winner with trophies, sefarim and the memories of a great season of MGBL basketball. The league would like to take this opportunity to thank our generous team sponsors, the family members and friends that come out every week to cheer the girls along, the coaches and their families who have volunteered countless hours to help guide the girls during the season and, of course, the girls who made this season a very memorable one.

The 10th season of MGBL boys basketball, tips off this sunday at Yavneh Academy, Ma’ayanot High School and Yeshivat Ben Porat Yosef.
