This past Sunday, marked the kick-off of the tenth season of MGBL boys basketball—and the games did not disappoint. Even though the games were exhibition and did not count in the standings, you would not know that watching the boys swishing and dishing all day. This week’s spotlight game takes us to Yeshivat Ben Porat yosef for the final game of the weekend: Wolverines vs Arnold Schoen MD. Arnold Schoen MD got off to a quick start thanks to a pair of threes from seventh graders Yoni Wilk and Judah Grunstein. The Wolverines answered back with dominant play from Ezra Haselkorn, scoring seven points of his own. When the first quarter came to an end, Arnold Schoen MD was clinging to a 12-9 lead. In the second quarter, the Wolverines got a huge boost from Yosef Warburg, scoring nine of his team high 16 points (including a ¾ court buzzer beater) pulling the two teams to a deadlock at 24 -24. For most of the third quarter, team Arnold Schoen MD had a hard time getting the ball in the cylinder but the Wolverines had no such issues as Eitan Haselkorn deposited four baskets of his own. Arnold Schoen MD found themselves down 18 points going into the fourth quarter, but would not give up. With Noah Gutlove at the line, Coach/Rabbi Ciment proclaimed “I smell a comeback” as Noah drained the first of two shots from the line. Team Arnold Schoen MD did try to battle back but the deficit was too large.
The excitement is in the air and the competition is sure to kick it up a notch next weekend when the games start to count, as all teams begin their quest for the championship.
All of the boys took home tenth anniversary Kippahs and dry-fit warm-up shirts. Please submit pictures to be featured weekly in this section to [email protected]
