What do Rube Goldberg machines have to do with Talmud? A driving questions of the second trimester’s unit on the pursuit of justice was—What are the levers you use to make ethical decisions? As the students are taking physics this year, one of the large projects they created for exhibition was a Rube Goldberg machine, where they implemented ideas about force, motion, speed and velocity at at the same time reflected the different ethical dilemmas and Talmudic debates they had discussed in the beit midrash. The levers of the Rube Goldberg machine literally reflected the levers students learned to use to make moral decisions. On exhibition night, students showed videos of the successful run-throughs of their Rube Goldberg machines, and one group even demo-ed it live!
