Naaleh Students Enjoy Workshop on Digital Citizenship

Over the last two months, Naaleh students participated in an engaging workshop about digital citizenship, presented by Hila Revah, LCSW, and Shifra Lamm, LSW, from Jewish Family Services and Children’s Center in Passaic-Clifton. The program highlighted how to use technology in a safe and responsible manner, emphasizing the importance of privacy and the potential long-term impact of their digital footprint. The presentation also focused on cyberbullying, and on the ways that online communication influences social interactions. As a followup to this presentation, the students participated in a program facilitated by the school psychologist, Dr. Ruth Glasser, called “Talking About Technology—Understanding how Technology Impacts our Relationships.” The girls focused on the benefits and challenges of using technology for communication, noting the absence of tone and body language in digital communication and the types of misunderstandings that can occur. The program also discussed ways in which people feel pulled in by their devices, often spending more time on them than they originally intended. Discussions about social media highlighted the importance of not comparing oneself to images portrayed online, and a recognition that not everything that is posted online is an accurate portrayal of reality. The girls talked about strategies that they can employ to help ensure that they are using technology in a purposeful and positive manner, rather than being unwittingly drawn to use it in other ways.
