(Courtesy of yumacs.com) The Yeshiva University men’s tennis team’s dynasty continues, as the Maccabees captured their sixth straight Skyline Conference championship, thanks to a 5-3 victory over No. 2 Farmingdale State College, at the Binghamton Racquet Club on Sunday afternoon.
Yeshiva (14-7) earns an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. The Macs’ first-round opponent, and location, will be announced on Monday, at 12:00 p.m.
Farmingdale (12-3) won two out of three doubles matches, but the top-seeded Maccabees rallied by winning four out of the five completed singles flights to earn the league title.
“There is always a lot of pressure going into championship day,” Yeshiva University head coach Jon Rubinstein said. “No one wants to see a streak end on their watch. After the injury to Amram (Wahnon), and us going down 1-2 after doubles and having to move people up, one would think that would put people in a negative frame of mind. Instead, everyone stepped up, came out firing and didn’t let them (the opposition) into the match.”
Yeshiva’s lone victory at doubles came courtesy of senior Mikey Ozery and junior Avidan Rudansky, as they won the second position by a score of 8-5.
Down 2-1 heading into singles play, Cohen got the Maccabees back on track by earning a convincing victory at the second position, 6-3, 6-1. Rudansky’s victory at the fourth flight gave Yeshiva a 3-2 advantage. Junior Lior Brik continued the Macs’ momentum by dominating at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
The Rams would not go down easily, as the honoree for Most Outstanding Player of the Skyline championships, freshman Mark Baker, won the first singles flight to keep Farmingdale alive in the match. However, junior Alexander Kalb clinched Yeshiva’s sixth straight conference championship, by winning the fifth position, 6-2, 6-1.
“These guys never cease to amaze me,” Rubinstein said. “They make me proud with their fighting spirit!”
